Luckily, Stacey is helping with the desserts table and making Brandy Jo’s favorite chocolate cake. Plus, Stacey is known for her amateur sleuthing skills. Her best friend needs that car and whoever stole it will be made to pay.

This might be the second book in the Strawberry Top Short Mystery series, but even if you start here you won't have to worry about missing out on anything. Sure, you'll get to know the characters more deeply if you start with Grammy's Secret Recipe, but the characters are well-rounded and well-written enough so you can dive right in.And every page (or bite) is a luxurious treat. In this volume we learn more about her friend Bobby Jo and can find out how black sheep family members are often treated in the South. The mystery is interesting, and the food to die for.

Terrific little read but it is more about life and relationships than it is about the mystery of the missing car. Can they rebuild the damage caused by failed marriages. Two friends leaning on each other for strength. Although I wish that one wasn't such a "woe is me" character. A good family book but not what I would call a mystery.
I liked this short story, with I read as a box set, all in one book so I could just binge read my way through. It also fleshes out the characters so you almost know the town's big players and what part they will play in the story.
Stacey returns home after a cheating-spouse divorce (scandalous!). As with all small towns, her settlement amount seems to grow by the number of people with whom she comes in contact. But she drives a "fancy foreign car" and that just doesn't fit the stereotype of a "Respectable, Jobless, Southern Divorcee". Of course, in real life, it does fit, but this small town is also small-minded.
In Black Sheep Cake, Stacey's best friend has her car stolen from a family reunion after loaning it to a friend. Brandy Jo is beside herself because it was her auntie's car and was given to her for reliable transportation for her young son while she juggles two part-time jobs. Brandy Jo has been struggling since her divorce as her ex only pays the minimum on child support and doesn't help with school/winter clothes, etc. And the ex's new girlfriend was questioned in the stolen recipe book debacle. See, making waves causes ripples later!
Brandy Jo is "the black sheep" of her family. Some thinking her wasting her time or somewhat scattered while she tries to hold on to her dream job at the TV station while also working at the Cafe, and some thinking her spoiled by living at home with her parents' help and her aunt giving her the car. (None of us like going back home or asmitting defeat , but with the economy what it is, it's becoming the norm but bringing the supportive family dynamic back to life as well.)
Stacey comes to the reunion (she's baking for it as well) and as soon as she finds out the car is missing, she's brainstorming on who benefits for hurting Brandy Jo. She tried to work out prime suspects and once again puts people off by her questioning "family business". But she does meet a man she just may be keen on while she's there. A good sign for her as her mother & Grammy are pushing for her to meet Mr. Right and pretending that they knew her husband WASN'T Mr. Right as soon as she married him. Don't you ADORE meddling family members reminding you of your failures every day?
Anyway, Stacey returns to the reunion once the car has been located, but it's ruined. Now, who would do that? Stacey is snooping along but has no answers until she leaves the adults to check on the children further down the lake. Children hear & see everything, a reminder we can all use in life. Then comes the confession and Brandy Jo is no longer the "Black Sheep", but she's met with some truths and ultimately has to make a decision on one permanent job for her son's sake, and since she just let the insurance lapse, she must drive her undependable car. Stacey is a meddler in her own way, but makes decisions out of the goodness of her heart. Her mother finally ends up with a shiny red Cadillac & the center of attention at the Cafe. Stacey no longer has her "Fancy Foreign Car". And Brandy Jo benefits in the long run as well.
After the first book, the story is a bit predictable but still a fun & light read. Anyone who lives in a very small town will recognize the struggles, and any fan of Cozy Mysyeries will enjoy.
I received a copy of this book for an honest review. The free book does not sway my opinion one way or another. This is not my favorite genre, but I find that a fun story is necessary in between several Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance series. It helps clear the mind of darkness and refresh my desire to dig back in, so I've added several Cozy Mysteries to my (several of them written by CC Dragon).

This is the 2nd book that I've read in the series. These are cozy mysteries with alot of humor and fun mixed in.
A family reunion for Brandy Jo and some hard-learned lessons bring about new courage and strength. Stacey/Strawberry Top ponders "what to do with her life"
I like Stacey ,family and friends. They solved the mystery. Her friend learned a valuable lesson in
life. Can't wait for the next book.
